Winter can be a frightening time of year for homeowners for a variety of reasons. Poor insulation, outdoor tools rusting, etc. One thing every homeowner should make sure of however is that their furnace is kept in tip-top shape. Unfortunately, not every homeowner knows how to do this. However, we've listed some tips below on how to prepare your furnace.
Clear your burners
Before doing this step, make 100% sure that your electricity and gas are cut off for your safety. You then use a screwdriver to get into the furnace. Once inside, be sure to thoroughly clear it of all debris and other obstructions.
Change your filters
This is generally good advice all year around, especially in summer and winter as you save quite a bit on heat and air conditioning in doing so. You should definitely have them changed once a month so they don't build up.
Remove obstruction of your heating vents
First, check to see that your heating vents don't have anything in the way, but also make sure that your vents are open, otherwise you won't feel the full benefit of your heating.
Check your thermostat
If your thermostat isn't working properly, that could see you having issue with accurately figuring out your heating situation in the first place. If your thermostat seems off, be sure to carefully examine it; it may be a problem of a missing battery or faulty wiring.
Consider hiring a professional
Finally, if you are not confident in your skills, or think that your efforts justify assistance, there's nothing wrong with calling a professional. They will not only do a more solid job typically, but will make it safer as well.
